A normally quiet suburban police department was shaken Thursday after a shooting left a police detective and the suspected shooter dead.
Details remain sketchy, but according to Jackson police, the detective, a veteran of the Jackson, Mississippi police department, brought the suspect in for questioning in a separate homicide.
The detective and suspected shooter were inside of police headquarters on the 3rd floor when an altercation, followed by two shots rang out. The detectives fellow officers entered the room and found the two men dead.
Investigators had not released the name of the detective or the suspect at press time. No word on how the suspect obtained the weapon used in Thursday's shooting while in police custody or why he allegedly shot the detective.
The shooting occurred around 6:00 p.m. (EST).
Chris Mims, a spokesman for Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.
Jackson, located south of the Yazoo River, is the capital of Mississippi. The Jackson police department is composed of more than 400 sworn officers supported by over 250 civilian personnel.
