The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating an early morning fatal shooting in Newark that claimed the life of a 33-year-old local man on Wednesday.
According to the press release, around 1:10 a.m. Ahmad Wilcox, of Newark, was shot multiple times at 17 Pennsylvania Avenue. At the time, police have no suspects or a motive in the shooting, but have said they believe Wilcox was targeted by his killers. Wilcox was transported to University Hospital where he died of his injuries at approximately 1:40 a.m.
Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio Force said while the task force is actively investigating the incident, he appealed to Newark residents to come forward with information that may aid investigators in developing leads and/or suspects.
“In the past, the public has played an integral part in several cases providing anonymous tips that have resulted in the arrest of individuals wanted for a multitude of crimes. I am confident that with the continued cooperation, those responsible for this shooting will not evade capture," said DeMaio.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide tips line at 1-877-847-7432 or the Newark Police Department’s tips line at 1-877-695-8477.
