Vegas Flight Diverted After Passenger Tries to Open Door

(CBS/AP) Updated at 10:55 p.m. ET

An airplane flying from Washington D.C. to Las Vegas has been diverted to Denver International Airport after a passenger tried to open a door on the plane while it was in flight.

DIA spokesman Jeff Green says that United Flight 223 was diverted to Denver at 5:10 p.m. Saturday, and police who met the plane at the gate took the passenger into custody.

CBS News Correspondent Lee Frank reports from Denver that the United flight - already delayed three hours - was diverted when the man, carrying a brown bag, reportedly tried to open an exit door in flight.

When asked what was in the bag, the man, described as strange-looking, large and unkempt, reportedly replied "You'll see," Frank reports. Passengers subdued the man who they say had been drinking and taking pills.

Green said the police were interviewing the passenger Saturday night but did not know if the man would be charged.

United Airlines and the Denver police department did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press.
