Oxygen's television show, Snapped, features the story of a Raleigh, North Carolina woman accused of plotting the Dec. 18, 2005 murder of her husband, a Navy reservist home on leave from Iraq.
Monique Berkley lured her husband, Paul Berkley to Millbrook Exchange Park where he was shot by two men Andrew Canty, then 20 and Latwon Johnson. Mrs. Berkley was having an affair with Canty and Johnson was dating the Berkley's daughter.
Mrs. Berkley told
police she tried to call off the plot to kill her husband, but police
didn't believe her and she was charged with first-degree murder.
Deciding not to run the risk of going to trial where prosecutors would
seek the death penalty, she opted to plead guilty to first-degree
murder. She was later sentenced to life in prison without the
possibility of parole.Canty, whom Berkley moved into her and her husband's home while the 46-year-old Sailor was away fighting the war in Iraq, also pleaded guilty to First Degree murder and received a life sentence. His co-conspirator, Johnson, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and received 23 years in prison despite the fact that he cooperated with investigators.
