Five former NYPD officers arrested in the robbery of a New Jersey perfume warehouse have been sentenced to lengthy federal prison terms announced U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.

Brian Checo, Orlando Garcia, Kelvin Jones, Richard LeBlanca and 33-year-old Luis Morales, all of New York, were arrested in March 2010 and charged with stealing approximately $500,000 of perfume while holding 11 employees hostage at a Carlstadt warehouse used by In-Style USA Inc.

According to a press release, the officers began conspiring to rob the warehouse in December 2009. They carried out their plan on February 9, 2010 with Garcia using his credit card to rent one of the trucks used in the heist. Garcia admitted that on the day of robbery, he and the other officers burst into the warehouse brandishing guns, NYPD-issued badges and announcing themselves as police officers. Following the arrest of several conspirators at the crime scene, Garcia met Morales, Jones, Checo and LeBlanca in New York, where they planned to conceal their roles in the holdup. Garcia reported his credit card stolen in order to hide his involvement.

Morales, of Brooklyn and Garcia received 70 and 51 months in prison, respectively. LaBlanca, 27, was sentenced Tuesday to 87 months in prison while Checo received 75 months. Jones went to trial and was found guilty in December 2010 of conspiring to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and interstate transportation of stolen merchandise. He was sentenced last week to 195 months in prison.
