Newark Liberty International airport was open for business at 6 a.m. this morning after officials cancelled all departing and arriving flights from Newark and four other major airports Friday afternoon in anticipation of hurricane Irene. John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Airports have resumed flights, though the airlines are now scrambling to reposition planes to relieve a backlog of travelers, at least 1 million of who were stranded by cancellations, and return flight operations to normal.
