The U.S. National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm watch for the Texas coast beginning at the mouth of the Rio Grande River to west of San Luis Pass as Tropical Storm Don continues to stir in the southern Gulf of Mexico Thursday.

Officials said Don, the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, formed Wednesday, and may strengthen during the next 48 hours, making landfall after midnight Saturday without reaching hurricane strength. An Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft headed towards the storms center for further analysis.
At 8 a.m. EST, Tropical Storm Don was packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and was located approximately 545 miles east-southeast of Corpus Christi. Forecasters say Don's center should pass through the southern and central Gulf of Mexico later today before approaching the Lone Star State tomorrow.

Forecast predicted an "above normal" 2011 Atlantic hurricane season. Half of the six to 10 hurricanes set to flare up could spawn into major storms for the United States.
