On Monday, the Department of Defense announced the death of an Army soldier killed in a non-combat related incident in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Pfc. Clinton E. Springer II, killed Friday Sept. 24, was assigned Company C, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.
The 21-year-old Sanford, Maine native was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom at the time of his death, which is still under investigation, according to The Department of Defense.

According to the Cape Cod Times, Springer grew up in Bourne, Massachusetts, and attended Bourne High School.
The Governor of Maine, John Baldacci, issued this statement in relation to Springer's death:
“Pfc. Springer died while serving his country. His loss is a terrible tragedy,” Gov. Baldacci said. “The military men and women serving in Afghanistan are called upon to complete dangerous missions far from home and family. Each and every one of them is a hero worthy of our respect and gratitude."
The young Privates father lives in Sanford and his mother and brother reside in Massachusetts.
