Partial List of Fatal Bear Attacks in North America

This is a partial list of reported fatal bear attacks that occurred in North America by decade. The list below the jump only details deaths involving two species of bear: the Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) and the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus).

For the purpose of this partial list, Brown Bear includes the Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), the Kodiak Bear and the Mexican Brown Bear.

2010 Brown Bear Deaths

Erwin Frank Evert, 70, Male, Killed June 17, 2010

Evert, a field botanist, was mauled by a grizzly bear in the Kitty Creek Drainage area of the Shoshone National Forest, just east of Yellowstone National Park. It was confirmed that the bear involved was trapped and tranqualized hours before, as part of a Grizzly Bear research team. The bear was later shot and killed from a helicopter by wildlife officials. Evert ignored posted warnings to avoid the area due to the likelihood of a bear encounter.


2000 Black Bear Deaths

Glena Ann Bradley, 50, Female, Killed May 2000

Killed and partially consumed by a 112-pound (51 kg) female and her 40-pound (18 kg) yearling. The attack occurred near the Goshen Prong/Little River trail junction 1.5 miles (2.4 km) upstream from Elkmont, Great Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, Tennessee.


Mary Beth Miller, 24, Female, Killed July 2, 2000

Attacked while on a training run in a wooded area on a military base near Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The bear was trapped and killed four days later. Investigators speculated that the bear was unhappy about a lost cub.



Ester Schwimmer, 5, Killed August 2002

The bear grabbed and killed a 5 month old infant from stroller on the porch of home in Fallsburg, New York



Elora Petrasek, 6,Killed April 13, 2006

She was killed and her mother and 2 year-old brother seriously injured in an attack in the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee.



Jacqueline Perry, 30, Killed September 6, 2005

Killed in a predatory attack at the Missinaibi Lake Provincial Park, north of Chapleau, Ontario, Canada. Her husband was seriously injured trying to protect her. Ministry staff shot and killed the bear near the area where the fatal attack occurred in a remote area of the park.



Donna Munson, 74, Female, Killed August 6, 2009

Ouray, Colorado Munson had been feeding bears for ten years, though repeatedly warned by wildlife officials. A small bear was wounded in a fight with a larger bear. Munson had been feeding the smaller bear. A larger, older bear came up to her house, where she had enclosed the back porch with a wire fence. She was attempting to scare away the older bear, when it clubbed her through the screened porch, dragged her off, and killed her. Wildlife officials ended up killing two bears as a result of this incident



Samuel Evan Ives, 11, Male, Killed June 17, 2007

Taken from a tent in American Fork Canyon in the Uinta National Forest in Utah County, Utah where he was sleeping with his stepfather, mother and 6-year-old brother. The bear was later killed by state Wildlife officials.



Kelly Ann Walz, 37, Female, Killed October 4, 2009

Ross Township, Pennsylvania. Kelly and her husband had an expired license to keep exotic pets. On Sunday, Kelly went out to clean the bear's cage. She threw a shovelfull of dog food to one side of the 15x15ft concrete and steel cage so she could clean the other side. Sometime while she was cleaning, the bear attacked and killed her. A neighbor came over and shot the bear, killing it.
